Living in Houston means hurricane season is a constant thought in the back of my mind, especially after a significant hurricane like Harvey. That catastrophic weather event made me eternally grateful for the minimal personal impact compared to others, in part because my community is newer, well built, and has many retention ponds in case the water level gets too high. But the challenges we all faced in the community made me mindful of addressing water issues around my home. I thought I was prepared for whatever Mother Nature was going to throw our way.
When the cold snap hit Texas hard this year, I relearned to work with the unexpected. I discovered that even with all the insulation in my home, one pipe still broke causing damage, not to mention the loss of water for 4 days. I learned with the power grid down I had to get creative for power and heat (I discovered that electric fireplaces work on D cell batteries). I also learned a lot about what ABR Industries needs in events like this and how we as a company needed to adjust so we could stay up and operational for our community and our valued customers, both locally and across the country.
On that note, we are working on our disaster and communication plan because our employees are the heart of ABR Industries’ business. We are also prepping for future needs with tools, power generation, and other equipment to best handle down times when we try to normalize ourselves. Lastly, we are listening to our customers, as many of you have disaster plans and a many more are just planning now.
We are excited to see people get on the air with POTA, SOTA, Field Day, and many other events. The enthusiasm for practicing ahead of emergency situations and building the skills needed to support all of us in the event of an emergency is moving and reassuring. To help on this front, ABR Industries has expanded our offering with a diverse set of portable cable and grounding products and working on new ones in the future.
In summary: Plan well. Train hard. Be safe. Enjoy.
